Dressmaker .dress files: export, import and share dresses

Press Export on the photo screen to save your dress as a .dress file, and Import on the same screen to open one. To change an imported dress, you need debug mode.

Get a .dress file of your dress

A .dress file holds the dress itself, so a friend can open it in their own game and see every piece up close.

  • Export saves the dress itself as a .dress file: its patterns, the fabric of every piece, its seams, accessories and measurements. Import puts a .dress file on the mannequin, so you can admire it and take its photo.

1Open the photo screen

The photo screen comes up when you finish a dress. For a dress you finished before, open its page in your sketchbook.

On a finished dress's page, Photo Mode takes that dress back to the photo screen for a new photo or an export. You won't see the sell or delivery card there.

2Press Export and pick a folder

Export opens a window to save the file. You choose the folder, and the game suggests a name made of Dress_ and the date and time. The file ends in .dress, and inside it's plain text, not a picture.

Pick a folder you'll find again, like your Desktop or Documents, and give the file a name you'll recognise. The game doesn't keep its own copy anywhere, so the window is your only chance to choose.

3Save a photo too

A .dress file isn't a picture, so friends can't see it until they import it. Take a photo as well, so people know what they're opening.

On the photo screen, Take Photo snaps the picture and opens a preview. Press Save to keep it as a picture file wherever you like: a square photo, 1920 by 1920 pixels, with the game's logo in the bottom right corner. Retake Photo closes the preview so you can try again.

Open a .dress file

You can't open a .dress file by double-clicking it. Open it from inside the game instead.

1Import it on the photo screen

Import opens a window where you pick one .dress file. Its dress takes the place of the one on the photo mannequin. It's only there to look at: the dress you deliver or sell is still the one you made, and nothing new goes into your sketchbook.

The calmest place to do it is a finished dress's page: press Photo Mode, then Import. There's no delivery or sell card on that screen, so you can turn the imported dress around and photograph it in peace.

2Look around the imported dress

The photo screen has its own camera buttons. Hold one down and the camera keeps moving: the magnifiers zoom in and out, the curved arrows circle the mannequin or raise and lower the camera, and the small triangles aim it higher or lower. The house button resets the camera. The mannequin itself turns with the mouse wheel, A and D, or a drag.

Edit an imported dress

On the photo screen you can only look. To change a dress from a file, import it from your sketchbook instead. That button only shows in debug mode.

The developers said the same on the official Discord:

You can export/import from the photo scene always, but to import/export from the sketchbook you need to enable cheatsA developer, Discord, 2026-09-22

1Turn on debug mode

Hold the left Ctrl and left Shift keys and press C to turn on the game's debug mode. It works on the title screen and while you play, and it stays on until you close the game. On a Mac, use Control, not Command.

2Export your current dress first

Importing replaces the dress you're working on, so first turn to a page you're happy to clear. If that dress matters to you, export it before you import anything.

3Import on your current dress's page

With debug mode on, the page of your current dress in the sketchbook shows two more buttons, Import and Export. Their labels stay in English in every language. Export there saves the dress you're working on as a .dress file. Import there clears away the dress you're working on and puts the file's dress in its place as your current dress, loaded the same way the game loads a dress in progress from your save. From there you carry on with it like any other dress.

Turn debug mode off

Debug mode has no off switch. Close the game, start it again, and it's gone. Loading your save without closing the game leaves it on.

What debug mode changes

In the Steam game, debug mode changes only a few things. A note says Debug mode enabled the first time you turn it on. Export Save shows in the pause menu and Import Save on the title screen. Your current dress's page gets Import and Export buttons. Commission names in your sketchbook get the game's own inner name in brackets after them. It gives you no gold and unlocks nothing.

So a commission name with an odd word in brackets after it just means debug mode is still on. Nothing in your save has changed, and it goes away when you restart the game.

Move a whole save

Debug mode can also move a whole save to another computer. The saves guide shows how, and why Import Save needs care.

Share a dress with friends

Send the .dress file and a photo together, in a chat message, an email or a shared cloud folder.

On the official Discord

The Dressmaker Discord has a showcase channel where players post their dresses. Many players add the .dress file next to their photos, so others can import the dress and see how it was made.

For the monthly showcases, the developers ask that each entry includes the dress file. Check the showcase rules on the server before you post.

What to do with a friend's dress

  • Import it on the photo screen and turn it slowly to see how it's built. Note its parts and fabrics, then sew your own version in your sketchbook.
  • Keep your own favourite dresses as .dress files in one folder. It makes a little lookbook you can open any time.

Common mistakes

  • Double-clicking a .dress file and expecting a picture. It's plain text, so open it with Import in the game.
  • Expecting to deliver a dress you imported on the photo screen. It's only there to look at, so the commission still checks the dress you made.
  • Importing from the sketchbook while a dress you care about is on the page. It's cleared away, so export it first.
  • Looking for a switch to turn debug mode off. Close the game and start it again.
  • Pressing Import Save when you meant to import a dress. It writes over the save in your first slot.
  • Sharing only a photo. Add the .dress file too, so friends can open the real thing.

The sketchbook guide covers the photo screen's other buttons, and the saves guide covers backups.
