Dressmaker off the rack: make a dress without a commission

Open the plus tab in your sketchbook and press Create New Dress to sew a dress just for you, then sell it or give it as a gift. Off-the-rack dresses unlock once Fierce Funeral is over, whether the dress succeeds or fails.

When off the rack opens

Fierce Funeral is a commission from Priya, early in the story. A developer put it this way before launch:

After the 3rd quest (when you meet Marie) the off rack dresses become availableA developer, Discord, 2026-09-15

The game tells you in the sketchbook, then points at the new tab:

Tutorial

You can now also make off the rack dresses which you can sell for extra income and prestige!

Click the non commissioned dress tab to start.

You can navigate the sketchbook by paging backwards or forwards.

Unless you skipped the tutorial, these tips show up the first time you open your sketchbook after off-the-rack dresses unlock.

Start an off-the-rack dress

Looking for a free mode, with no client and no rules? Off the rack is it.

1Open the plus tab

  • Friendships
  • Current dress
  • New dress

Three tabs sit at the top left of the sketchbook: a head for friendships, a dress for your current dress, and a plus for a new dress. The dress tab takes you to your current dress, and the plus tab appears once off-the-rack dresses unlock.

2Create a new dress

  • Create New Dress on the new dress page starts an off-the-rack dress on a fresh page after your other open dresses, and that dress becomes your current dress. Your commission keeps its own page and dress. Each press adds one more page.
  • An off-the-rack dress has no client, no budget and no requirement lines, so you can sew whatever you like.

Design it in the sketchbook, then press Draft Pattern, just like for a commission.

3Size the mannequin

An off-the-rack dress has no client to fit, so the mannequin sizing screen shows no fit score and you can confirm any shape. Sewing it for a friend? Press Load Measurement and pick her to fill the Body row with the numbers you measured for her. Then turn the gears until the Mannequin row matches.

4Cut, sew and finish

Cut and sew it the way you would for a client.

The photo card with Complete Commission, Sell As Off-Rack and Gift Dress comes up when you press Finish Dress on the dress you're working on. So you can photograph, sell or gift a dress only once every piece is on the mannequin and every seam is sewn. On Librarian Workwear, your very first commission, the card has no Sell As Off-Rack button. You can still photograph a past dress from your sketchbook, but its photo screen has no card.

Sell your dress

  • You won't see Complete Commission while the sketchbook is open on an off-the-rack dress.
  • Selling a dress pays (materials + labour) x (50 + quality) % x (100 + rank) %. Better quality and a higher rank both mean more gold.
  • Selling a dress also adds 0.01 x its quality in prestige, scaled the same way as the prestige from any other dress.

The money guide works through an example under Selling a dress. The Sell Price tool shows what your dress will sell for.

When measurements matter

  • The mannequin size doesn't change the sell price, so a dress you mean to sell can be any shape. A bigger mannequin does make the bodice and skirt pieces wider, and wider pieces use more fabric.
  • Every gift commission has a quality line of at least 80, and that line counts the fit to her real body. So set the mannequin to her measurements if you want the gift to meet every line.

The gifts guide explains what happens when a gift misses a line.

Gift your dress

Off-the-rack dresses are the safe ones to give away, since no commission needs them. The gifts guide covers who can get one and how to pick what she'll love.

Practise for free

Burlap is free (0 gold per metre), so you can buy it even with an empty purse. It lowers 16 of the 22 tags and raises Uncomfortable by 50 and Patterned by 10.

A Burlap dress costs nothing, so it's a good place to practise lining up the grain and sewing neat seams. The grain guide and the quality guide have tips for both.

Can you delete an off-the-rack dress?

  • You can delete an off-the-rack dress with the bin on its page, open or finished. The game asks first ("This will permanently delete this dress from your records. Are you sure?"), and then the page is gone for good. On an open dress, its accessories go back to your stock first. Commission pages have no bin, and Restart Dress only clears the dress off the page.
  • Sold dresses aren't lost. On the friendships pages, Off Rack Dresses shows every dress you've sold, and a gift shows on that client's page under Dress History. Only a dress you delete with its bin leaves those lists.

The game checks with you first: This will permanently delete this dress from your records. Are you sure? Commissions have no bin, so press Create New Dress only when you want a new dress.

Common mistakes

  • Pressing Sell As Off-Rack on a commission's dress. Only Complete Commission completes a commission. If you sell or gift its dress instead, the commission stays open with no dress, and you'll need to sew a new one.
  • Losing a commission after starting an off-the-rack dress. Many players lose Marie's first commission, Respectful Funeral, right after off the rack opens. Nothing is deleted: it still has its own page, and the lost commission guide shows how to turn back to it.
