Dressmaker gifts: how to gift a dress and earn stars

Finish any dress, press Gift Dress on the photo screen and pick a client from the list. Gift Dress opens once Art Appreciator is over, whether the dress succeeds or fails. When you press Gift Dress, only clients you already have some friendship with show up in the list.

When gifting opens

Art Appreciator is a commission from Vivian. The walkthrough shows where it comes in the story.

Unless you skipped the tutorial, this tip shows up on the photo screen the first time you finish a dress after gifting opens.

Tutorial

You may now also gift dresses to the clients you've met. Each client has their own preferences and measurements, you can see these in the Sketchbook.

How to gift a dress

1Check her personal style

Every client has a gift commission of her own, a list of things she'd love in a dress. Her page in Friendships sums it up under Personal style, one word per line. Each friendship star uncovers one more word, and the rest stay hidden as ???. The quality line never shows there.

The list below has every client's words. Each client's page on this wiki shows the full lines, numbers included.

2Sew it off the rack

Sew the gift off the rack, so no commission loses its dress. The off-the-rack guide shows how to start one.

  • Every gift commission has a quality line of at least 80, and that line counts the fit to her real body. So set the mannequin to her measurements if you want the gift to meet every line.
  • An off-the-rack dress has no client to fit, so the mannequin sizing screen shows no fit score and you can confirm any shape. Sewing it for a friend? Press Load Measurement and pick her to fill the Body row with the numbers you measured for her. Then turn the gears until the Mannequin row matches.

Not sure you measured her right? Her real numbers are in the measurements table.

3Finish it and gift it

The photo card with Complete Commission, Sell As Off-Rack and Gift Dress comes up when you press Finish Dress on the dress you're working on. So you can photograph, sell or gift a dress only once every piece is on the mannequin and every seam is sewn. On Librarian Workwear, your very first commission, the card has no Sell As Off-Rack button. You can still photograph a past dress from your sketchbook, but its photo screen has no card.

Press Gift Dress and pick her name. She'll tell you at the front desk what she thinks.

How a gift is judged

  • A gift is judged on the client's gift commission. If the dress meets every line, that's the best result. If it misses a line, it still succeeds when its quality is above 80, counted without a client. Below that, the gift fails.
  • Whether a gift meets every line or only has the quality, it gives +1 friendship (one star). What changes is the reaction: a happy one if it meets every line, a neutral one if it only has the quality, and a sad one if it fails. Even a failed gift gives +0.25 friendship and +0.25 prestige.
  • Gifts don't pay any gold.

Neat cutting and sewing are enough for the star. Her style decides how happy she is about it.

Without a client, quality is 40% grain and 60% stitching. The game uses this quality for the sell price, for gifts and for the top-quality achievement. The quality guide shows how grain and stitching add up.

What friendship stars unlock

  • Every whole friendship star you earn with a client unlocks the patterns listed for that star, up to 5 stars.
  • You don't have to click anything to keep a star's patterns. They're yours the moment the star fills, and the pop-up at the front desk just shows them off.
  • At 5 stars, her postcard appears on her page in Friendships.

Wondering which commission gives which pattern? New patterns come only from friendship stars. No commission unlocks a pattern by itself, and new ranks bring fabrics and accessories, not patterns. A commission helps by raising the client's friendship.

A star also uncovers one more word of her personal style. Every client's page here lists the patterns behind each star. Start with Rose's to see how it looks.

How to raise friendship

  • A commission that succeeds gives +1 friendship (one star) and +1 prestige. A failed one gives +0.25 friendship and +0.25 prestige.
  • There's no limit on gifts. You can give the same client a new dress as often as you like.

Commissions and gifts both earn a star when they go well. Pigeon commissions are commissions too, so they count the same way. The pigeon guide lists them all.

Every client's personal style

Here's what each client loves, in the order her stars uncover it:

  • Rose: Professional, Simple, Wool, Green and Button
  • Prudence: Elegant, Glamour, Silk, Pink and Jewel
  • Priya: Romantic, Elegant, Flowers, Blue and Flower
  • Marie: Eclectic, Elegant, Silk, Orange and Trim
  • Edith: Glamour, Risqué, Sequin, Feather and Blue
  • Fiona: Cute, Workwear, Patterned, Pink and Other
  • Alice: Gothic, Cute, Lace and White
  • Vivian: Gothic, Risqué, Velvet and Black
  • Dorothy: Eclectic, Glamour, Blue and Brooch
  • Adora: Cute, Romantic, Purple, Silk and Bow

Gift button or client not showing?

  • No Gift Dress button? Check that gifting has opened (see When gifting opens), and that you reached the photo screen with Finish Dress.
  • A client isn't in the list? Friendship with each client starts at 0, so a client joins the gift list once her first commission is over.
  • Gave away a commission's dress by mistake? Only Complete Commission completes a commission. If you sell or gift its dress instead, the commission stays open with no dress, and you'll need to sew a new one. The lost commission guide shows where its page is.
