Dressmaker ranks: highest rank, prestige and unlocks

The top rank is Rank 50 - Grandmaster. Your rank is your prestige rounded down, and it stops there even if you earn more. Ranks stock the shop with fabrics and accessories, and patterns come from your clients' friendship stars.

The short answer

  • Prestige comes from five things: commissions you finish, gifts that fall short, dresses you sell, newspaper reports and the final commission. Nothing in the game takes prestige away.
  • Each new rank brings that rank's fabrics and accessories to the International Emporium.
  • New patterns come only from friendship stars. No commission unlocks a pattern by itself, and new ranks bring fabrics and accessories, not patterns. A commission helps by raising the client's friendship.

So you're climbing two ladders at once. Your rank belongs to the shop and brings new stock. Friendship stars belong to one client and bring her patterns.

How to earn prestige

Every commission you finish moves you up a little, even one that falls short. Here's what each source gives:

  • A commission that succeeds gives +1 friendship (one star) and +1 prestige. A failed one gives +0.25 friendship and +0.25 prestige.
  • Each newspaper report gives 2 to 4.5 prestige when it plays at the front desk, and that prestige doesn't shrink with the dresses you've finished. The 13 reports give 39.5 prestige in all.
  • Selling a dress also adds 0.01 x its quality in prestige, scaled the same way as the prestige from any other dress.
  • Whether a gift meets every line or only has the quality, it gives +1 friendship (one star). What changes is the reaction: a happy one if it meets every line, a neutral one if it only has the quality, and a sad one if it fails. Even a failed gift gives +0.25 friendship and +0.25 prestige.

Prestige from a dress is multiplied by 6 / (6 + n). n is the number of dresses you finished before it, failed and sold dresses included, gifts not included. So the multiplier shrinks a little with every dress that counts.

Your first dresses move the bar the most. Later on, the newspaper reports carry a big part of your climb, because their prestige never shrinks. Each one follows a story commission, so keep the story going and they'll keep landing on the front desk.

Selling dresses adds prestige too, but each sale also counts as a finished dress, so it makes the next commission's prestige a touch smaller. Sell dresses for the gold. Commissions and reports do most of the work on your rank.

Want to plan a climb? The Prestige and Rank tool adds up commissions, sales, gifts and reports for you and shows the rank you'll reach.

What is the prestige bonus?

It's a line on the sale summary when you sell a dress, and your rank sets it. The Prestige Bonus (%) line on the sale summary comes from your rank: it is 100% plus one for each rank. At the top rank, Rank 50, it reads 150%, so a higher rank means more gold for the same dress. The money guide works through a whole sale price.

Where to see your rank

The sidebar shows your rank and its title with your gold. The bar that shows how close you are to the next rank only appears at the front desk, right after you earn prestige.

So keep an eye on the front desk after each dress. The bar fills there, and a new rank flashes up with its new title.

What each rank adds to the shop

Every rank brings something new to the International Emporium. Open a group to see what each rank adds and the dearest pieces in it. The Ranks page lists every item, rank by rank, and Fabrics has every fabric in the game.

Which star unlocks which pattern

  • Every whole friendship star you earn with a client unlocks the patterns listed for that star, up to 5 stars.
  • You don't have to click anything to keep a star's patterns. They're yours the moment the star fills, and the pop-up at the front desk just shows them off.

No commission hands you a pattern by itself, so the quickest way to new patterns is a close friend. Commissions and gifts both earn stars, and the gifts and friendship guide shows how to give a dress.

Here's every client, in the order you meet them, with the patterns behind each star:

Rose: 11 patterns

Prudence: 11 patterns

Priya: 14 patterns

Marie: 12 patterns

Edith: 11 patterns

Fiona: 12 patterns

Alice: 12 patterns

Vivian: 12 patterns

Dorothy: 12 patterns

Adora: 10 patterns

Each client's own page shows the same list. Start from Clients to find her.

Unlocked something but can't find it?

  • A new collar or sleeve isn't in the sketchbook? The sketchbook only offers patterns you've unlocked, and only the ones that fit the bodice on the page. Switch bodices and the collar and sleeve choices change with it. A collar or sleeve that doesn't fit the new bodice drops back to No Collar or No Sleeves. The sketchbook guide shows which bodice to pick.
  • Waiting for a rank to bring a pattern? Ranks only stock the shop. Look at the client lists above to see whose star you need.
