When the commission arrives

MarieGood afternoon.
MarieMy name is Marie Laroche, and I am here to enquire about a dress for a funeral.

You pick one answer:

  • YouOf course. This would be for the funeral of the late duke, correct?
    MarieYes, that’s right.
  • YouThis old duke’s death is doing wonders for my business.
MarieA…rather callous attitude, but I can’t fault your pragmatism.
MarieEvery cloud has its silver lining, I suppose. Good for you, Dressmaker.
  • You…you don’t want something bright pink, do you?
MarieNo? That would be very strange.
YouAnd you don’t want to strike fear into the hearts of other guests?
    Marie…also…………no?
MarieAs a matter of fact, I never met the late duke. This is my first time in Twillford.
MarieI grew up in the next county over, in Tulleton, but I have spent the last eight years working abroad at the embassy in Charmeuse.
YouI am new here too!
MarieThen we should be friends.
MarieAlthough I probably won’t stay long. My parents are relocating to Twillford, and I was only given leave to help them settle in.
YouThat sounds very dutiful of you.
MarieOh, please say that in my father’s hearing. He would probably fall off his chair laughing.
MarieNo, Dressmaker, I am afraid I am by far his most disreputable daughter. My four sisters are all married, while I have “roamed the world unchaperoned and outrageously dressed.”
MarieThat is how my mother puts it, anyway. In reality, I have…largely only roamed the offices of the embassy building.
YouAnd you did so…outrageously dressed?
MarieOh, you know, women from Charmeuse favour colourful, patterned clothing. I now feel more comfortable in such dresses.
Marie…to my mother’s great dismay.
YouSo you are a diplomat?
MarieNo, no, only the assistant to one. At least, for now.
MarieBut I do help with Mr Dervisham’s work!
Marie…and arrange his social calendar…organise his laundry…make him tea…
MarieYou know, just building my way up.
YouRight.
MarieMr Dervisham has travelled to Twillford too — he says he wishes to meet with the local community, so that he is ‘better positioned to represent their interests abroad.’
Marie…I suspect he just saw the chance to take a paid vacation.
MarieIn any case, we will both be attending the funeral to offer our respects to the family.
MarieUnfortunately, I don’t own a single black dress.
MarieCould you make one for me? It must be simple, formal and elegant. Very demure, very mindful of the occasion. I can offer you 300 for this commission.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

MarieEven my mother couldn’t complain about this. It’s just what I need, Dressmaker. Thank you!

If the dress fails

MarieOh. Oh, it’s…hmm.
MarieI think my mother will have some choice words, once she sees me in this dress.
MarieThose words being: “no,” “never,” and “absolutely not.”
Marie…what a headache.

When the commission arrives

MarieGood day.
YouOh, good day, Marie. I didn’t expect you would still be in town.
MarieNeither did I.
MarieOne thing led to another, and, well…
MarieYou might recall that I’m Mr Dervisham’s assistant? Well, at the late Duke’s funeral, Mr Dervisham volunteered to resolve an inheritance dispute for a prominent local family.
MarieIn reality, this means I am helping to resolve this dispute.
YouIs that the work of a diplomat?
MarieNo.
MarieNevertheless!
MarieThe deceased’s will states that the estate is to be equally divided between three sons. Perfectly reasonable, yes?
MarieThe problem is that the estate includes lifestock. And the lifestock includes a young prize-winning goat.
MarieAll three sons want the animal, and are each technically entitled to a third of it.
Marie…as you might imagine, ‘equitable division of goat’ is a rather grim outcome from an animal welfare perspective.
YouPoor Master Billygruff.
MarieIndeed. But the sons aren’t budging, and violent threats are now being made against some perfectly innocent chickens.
MarieWe urgently require a diplomatic resolution!
MarieUnfortunately, Mr Dervisham has spent the entire week at the country club.
YouThat doesn’t seem fair.
MarieOh, it’s just the way of things. The important part is that I remain calm, avoid raising my voice, and refrain from complaining.
MarieExpressing any anger whatsoever would be disastrous. In part because if I started yelling at this useless excuse of a man, and his STUPID LAUNDRY, and his TEA WITH THREE AND A QUARTER SPOONS OF SUGAR, NO MORE AND NO LESS…
MarieI might never stop.
MarieWhich would be undiplomatic of me.
MarieSo I shan’t be doing that.
YouI…see.
MarieI am a professional.
Marie…or so I tell myself.
MarieAt times, it feels like all I’ll ever be given credit for is making Mr Dervisham’s tea.
MarieMy mother says ambition is unbecoming in a woman, but I’ve always had a restless spirit. Since I was a girl, I’ve dreamed of being a diplomat — exploring new places, meeting different people, resolving conflict…it seemed so exciting.
Marie……………
MarieI must simply try harder. And that starts with resolving all this goat nonsense.

If the dress for Respectful Funeral passed:

MarieMy respectful appearance at the former Duke's funeral apparently bought me some goodwill from the community, and I won't squander it.

Otherwise:

MarieMy appearance at the former Duke's funeral apparently did not impress the Twillford community, so I'll have to find a way to overcome their animosity."
MarieRight! I need to remind these three goat-loving sons of a farmer that they are grown men with responsibilities to their chickens. For that, I must dress in a way that makes me feel confident.
MarieWill you make me a patterned, eclectic dress? It should be flowing and colourful — but not too formal. I don’t want these men to think I am putting on airs. Will 250 be enough?
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

MarieAh, perfect! This is just the sort of dress I might wear back in Charmeuse.
MarieYou’ve captured my style so well.
MarieThank you for listening to me ramble on, Dressmaker.
MarieIt is sometimes a relief to talk about my frustrations. Strangely, I had a similar feeling while talking to Duke Hassan at his uncle’s funeral.
MarieHe was unexpectedly sympathetic. He even offered to speak to the Princess’ regent on my behalf.
MarieI imagine he was simply saying that to be nice, but it was kind of him, nonetheless.
MarieWell, I must be off. Good day!

If the dress fails

MarieI don’t know if this look communicates ‘diplomat.’
MarieIt might say ‘children’s entertainer?’ That wasn’t the career I had in mind.
MarieAh well, what is the harm? The farmers already think I’m strange.
MarieThank you for listening to me ramble on, Dressmaker.

When the commission arrives

MarieRejoice, Dressmaker!
MarieThe goat remains in a single piece!

You pick one answer:

  • YouRejoice! Rejoice!
MarieI feared that Billygruff was going to end up in three separate stewpots, but no!
  • YouPeople in Twillford have the strangest problems.
MarieProblems that can be solved with diplomacy!
    YouAnd with dressmaking, surprisingly.
MarieWho would have thought fashion could play such a pivotal role in regional politics?
  • YouBut what about the chickens???
MarieAlso intact! All of the threatened lifestock has survived unscathed!
MarieThe mediation was a little tense, but my proposal that the three heirs take custody of the goat on a rotating monthly basis was accepted.
MarieThe kid will have three daddies.
YouAnd Mr Dervisham? Was he impressed?
MarieHah! Him!
MarieWhat do I care for the opinions of that hapless layabout?
MarieMr Dervisham will need to pull up his socks and make his own damn tea, because I quit.
MarieThe farmers wrote letters of commendation for me, and sent them to the regent. To the office of the crown itself!
MarieAs a result, I have been offered a new position as an official diplomatic envoy of Twillford.
MarieIt is unheard of! A woman representing Twillford abroad! My mother is beside herself.
YouWhy did you not say that first? This is far more important than the goat!
MarieWell, probably not from the goat’s perspective.
MarieThe truth is that the situation is a little complicated.
MarieYou see, I don’t think I would have been offered the position if Duke Hassan had not also spoken up for me.
MarieWhich…entangles things.
Marie…
MarieDressmaker, can you keep a secret?

You pick one answer:

  • YouSpill! Spill! Spill!
  • YouCustomer confidentiality is one of my top priorities.
  • YouUh oh.
MarieHassan has admitted that he has feelings for me. Romantic ones.
MarieHe has been, uh…
Mariewriting me poetry.
YouPoetry!
MarieKeep your voice down!
MarieI like him very much too. Where my soul is restless, his is calm. In his company I never feel compelled to hide my true feelings.
MarieBut this courtship…I fear…
MarieIf people find out, they will assume I was only offered a position because of Hassan’s influence.
MarieAnd…and what if they are right?
MarieThis might just be, I don’t know, the Duke indulging me. Or worse, attempting to bribe his way into my affections.
Marie………
MarieI must tell him what is weighing on my mind. I will see him at the Spring Fete, and explain everything.
MarieBut for that, I will need a new dress.
MarieCould I ask for an elaborate gown? Eveningwear, of course, and I would like for this dress to be, you know…romantic. I’m envisioning loose, draping silks? I can offer you 500 for the job.

If the dress passes

MarieOh goodness. This is lovelier than I anticipated. You truly get better with every commission, Dressmaker.
MarieI hope to see you again soon.

If the dress fails

MarieIt’s a good thing the Duke already likes me, because this dress might send him running otherwise.
Marie…it might still do that, actually.
MarieI don't know, Dressmaker. Would it be too much trouble for you to take another look at this dress?
YouNo, of course not.

The dress goes back on your table, so you can alter it.

MarieReally? Oh, thank you so much.

When the commission arrives

MarieDressmaker!
MarieI need to hide!
YouThis has taken a sudden dramatic turn.
MarieOh, don’t mock me. I’ve spent the last few days hounded by every gossip in Twillford.
MarieNot to mention my mother.
MarieThe fitting room, maybe. Or I could crawl under your cutting table. If you drape a few bolts of cloth over the edge—
MarieNo, that would never work.
MarieI will have to adopt a disguise, and change my name. Although, technically, I’m already changing my name, so—

You pick one answer:

  • YouWould you kindly explain what is going on?
    MarieYou haven’t heard?
  • YouHas your undercover identity as a spy been exposed?
MarieNo! And there is a difference between diplomacy and spy craft!
  • YouSlow down, Marie.
MarieYes, sorry. It’s all rather overwhelming.
MarieHassan asked for my hand in marriage.
MarieIt has been utter mayhem.
YouSo, you said…no?
MarieWhat? Of course I didn’t say ‘no!’ I adore him.
MarieHe is enough to make me believe in the powers of destiny and providence. If I am the sun, then he is my sky. If he is the moon, then I am the sea drawn helplessly in his wake. He is solid ground, and cool winter air, and the quiet before dawn.
MarieAnd I have been reading far too much of his poetry.
MarieOf course I am marrying Hassan, Dressmaker. That doesn’t mean the choice hasn’t unleashed havoc on the town.
MarieMy mother practically shouted the news from the rooftops.
YouBut what about your dream of becoming a diplomat?
MarieOh, that! No, that hasn’t changed at all.
MarieWhen Hassan asked me to marry him, it suddenly dawned on me: no matter what I accomplish, people will say that I cheated.
MarieI can prove myself capable a hundred times over, and then a hundred times more. I can be flawless, I can do everything right…and these people will still be unsatisfied.
MarieIt’s so obvious, isn’t it? I will never escape judgement. I will never be able to stop proving myself.
MarieAnd if that’s the case, then…
MarieThen I might as well embrace the advantages afforded to a diplomat who just so happens to be a Duchess.
MarieEvery day, I will wake up and prove myself again. Every day, I will prove them all wrong.
MarieAnd they can watch me.
YouWhoa.
MarieOh, stop that. I’m currently hiding from my own mother inside a dressmaker’s shop.
MarieSpeaking of which, I will actually need a wedding dress in the very near future, so…
YouWait, I get to make the wedding dress for a DUCHESS?
MarieOf course you do. I would trust no one else with the task.
MarieEveryone’s eyes will be on me — I wish to look powerful, but also true to myself. The dress should be elaborate, eclectic and formal. It need not be traditionally white — I have always felt more comfortable in a little colour. I have 2500 to offer you.

MarieIt’s spectacular.
MarieI don’t know if I am worthy of this dress. It’s…oh no, I mustn’t get emotional now.
YouI think that should be allowed, every now and again.
MarieI think I shall be very happy.
MarieThank you.

If the dress fails

Marie…
Marie…Dressmaker…it's my wedding.

Diplomatic Outreach

When the commission arrives

MarieGood morning, Dressmaker.
MarieIt’s so nice to be back in your shop.

If you have 48 prestige or more:

MarieFrom what I hear, you have gained so much prestige that people are calling your shop the finest in all of Hemstitch.

You pick one answer:

  • YouHow can I help you, Duchess Marie?
MarieOh, you really don’t have to call me ‘Duchess’ in private.
  • YouDo I have to bow or curtsy now?
    MariePlease don’t.
  • YouAh, the ambassador for Twillford!
MarieDon’t be silly. Twillford doesn’t have an ambassador.
MarieSo much has happened since the wedding. I have barely been able to catch my breath.
YouHow is married life?
MarieOh, wonderful! Hassan is really coming into his own as the Duke. And I like him so much, I can hardly stand it.
MarieHe is a genuinely good person, you know. He cares for others so deeply.
MarieBut let me not get too sentimental at this time of the morning. Have you heard about the coronation?
YouThe coronation?
MarieIt is all over the broadsheets. The missing Princess has returned! It seems she escaped her kidnappers’ clutches, concealed herself as a humble commoner, and then stole back home to the royal apartments.
MarieIsn’t it the most dashing story?
MarieShe returned just in the nick of time too — as soon as she comes of age on Sunday, she will ascend to the throne.
MarieAs the Duchess and diplomatic envoy of Twillford, I am expected to attend the coronation. It will be my first official appearance!
MarieI am very interested to meet this mysterious young woman.
YouYou appear to be settling into the role of Diplomat Duchess very well.
MarieOh, it’s been a whirlwind. Directly after the coronation, Hassan and I will be journeying west — the crown wishes for me to reaffirm friendly relations with the nation of Cambric.
MarieIt’s a great responsibility, I know, but I could not be happier.
YouYou’ll come back though, won’t you?
MarieOf course! In fact, we will probably only be gone for a few months.
MarieTwillford is home for Hassan.
MarieAnd for me, too.

If you have 5 friendship stars or more with Marie:

MarieI will miss you in particular. You've been my closest friend in this town.
MarieFirst, however, is the coronation!
MarieLet’s see…I will need a gown. It must be elaborate, glamorous eveningwear. I would like to make a bold statement with a patterned fabric — something that might come from a faraway land, perhaps? I can give you 1500.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

MarieMy word, Dressmaker.
MarieI shall be the one who resembles a princess in this dress. It is nothing short of exceptional.
MarieNot that I expected anything less from you.
MarieBy the way, I don’t suppose you have seen my sister-in-law? Hassan is worried about Priya.
MarieHe said she has not been herself of late, and he believes she might have slipped out the house in the middle of the night yesterday.
MarieI also feel that she has seemed somewhat…distracted, recently. She has not been painting, and claims to have no appetite.
MarieIn fact, if I did not know better, I would believe her heartbroken.
MarieI haven’t seen her since yesterday. If you run into her, Dressmaker, please treat her kindly.

If the dress fails

MarieIt is…intriguing?
MariePerhaps not in a good way.
MariePerhaps in a way that could be perceived as…undiplomatic.
YouIf it's a question of the national importance, I will endeavour to do better.

The dress goes back on your table, so you can alter it.

MarieYou are surely the best Dressmaker in the country.

MarieDressmaker, what rhymes with ‘exudes?’

You pick one answer:

  • YouVerisimilitudes
MarieYou just had that one ready to deploy!?
  • YouFamilial feuds
MarieThematically weighty, but I don’t think it will quite work.
  • You…Oods.
    Marie'Oods?'
    YouYes.
MarieI am not sure that is a real word.
YouNo, it’s a technical sewing term. You wouldn’t know it.
    MarieHmmm.
MarieOh, I don’t know.
MarieHassan is struggling to finish this poem, and asked for my help.
MarieThe problem is that I don’t have a creative bone in my body.
Marie…you’re an imaginative person, aren’t you?
YouMa’am, my business is sewing dresses.
MarieVery creatively!
MarieLet’s see…stanza one…
Marie“In all my dreams, her face exudes…”

You pick one answer:

  • You“a sweetness kin to sugar’d foods.”
MarieI’m not sure the subject should be edible, but all right. I suppose that seems…cute?
  • You“the grace of her fine attitudes.”
    MarieSee, that’s not too terrible.
YouIt sounds like her face is leaking.
    MarieBut elegantly.
  • You“my poem is weak, please send me nudes.”
    Marie………
MarieStill better than anything I can come up with, I’ll take it.
MarieNext stanza!
Marie“ She haunts my night, she fills my day…”

You pick one answer:

  • You“Oh rose-bloom love, my heart will stay.”
    MarieWho is this ‘Rose’ character?
    MarieDoes Hassan know her?
MarieI don’t like the sound of her.
  • You“Exorcise her! send her away!”
MarieDressmaker, I don’t think the subject is literally haunting the speaker.
YouWho is poem-ing here, me or you?
    MarieOh, very well.
  • You“Have you consider’d she might be gay?”
MarieYes, why shouldn’t the woman be cheerful? Good for her.
MarieLast stanza!
Marie“My darling lamb, angel divine”

You pick one answer:

  • You“May our union stand the test of time.”
MarieRight, of course. But is ‘union’ one syllable or two? Because it doesn’t scan if—
    YouIT’S ROMANTIC.
  • You“Joint assets raise our bottom line!”
MarieWhat an unexpectedly practical ending. I support these professional, fiscally-savvy lovers.
  • You“Such a great shame you smell like swine.”
    MarieDressmaker.
MarieDressmaker, we are trying to make art here.
YouAnd art must deal with uncomfortable issues, must it not?
    MarieLike…malodour?
MarieVery well.
MarieCongratulations, Dressmaker. Together, we have penned possibly the worst poem ever written.
Marie
In all my dreams, her face exudes…
[the line you picked]
She haunts my night, she fills my day…
[the line you picked]
My darling lamb, angel divine
[the line you picked]
MarieGood grief.
MarieThe written word did not deserve this.
MarieAnd yet we must commemorate our accomplishment somehow.
MarieYes.
MarieYes, you will make me a dress inspired by this poem.
MarieIt should be [cute / elegant / risqué], [floral / goth / colorful], and [romantic / professional / uncomfortable]. You have a budget of 500.
MarieShare our vision with the world, Dressmaker.

MarieNow, let me go deliver this poem to Hassan.

MarieWell.
MarieAt least this dress cannot be said to be worse than the poem that inspired it.
MarieBecause that poem is terrible.
MarieLet me go deliver the poem to Hassan. His reaction will probably take my mind off this dress.

MarieNo, I definitely think you should get out more.

MarieYou should! You work too hard.
MarieIt’s the perfect weather for a picnic!
MarieI have an old friend visiting me from Charmeuse. I’m showing her around town tomorrow, and then we’ll have tea on the lawns outside the library.
MarieThis friend is very dear to me. When I first moved to Charmeuse, she took me under her wing and helped me to learn the local language.
MarieIt’s a joy to have her in Twillford!
MarieWould you be willing to make me a dress for our picnic? I wish for it to be bright and patterned, so that my friend doesn’t feel out of place wearing her clothes from Charmeuse. Just something cool and eclectic for the daytime. I can offer you 500.
