When the commission arrives

PriyaHello!
PriyaI am here to purchase a dress for my uncle’s funeral!
YouI am…sorry for your loss?
PriyaOh no, don’t be! He was dreadful. Dukes often are, you know. Too much coddling at an impressionable age rots the character.
PriyaAnyway, he is dead and shan’t be missed, but I still need to look appropriately sad in public.

You pick one answer:

  • YouA Duke for an uncle! That must make you rich!
PriyaReasonably, yes, although people seldom address the matter quite so bluntly.
  • YouI feel somewhat bad for this man.
PriyaOnce, he made his cook prepare four suckling pigs for his dinner, just so he could pick the crispiest.
    YouI don’t know, I still—
PriyaHe had a designated ‘potato boy’ at the estate. That’s a boy who he could throw potatoes at, whenever the whim struck him.
    YouBut—
PriyaFor his fifty-fourth birthday, he demanded the construction of a chicken-launching trebuchet, which directly resulted in a county-wide poultry shortage.
    YouChicken-launching—
PriyaWhen I was nine, he told me I had ‘a mannish chin.’
    YouOh well, that’s—
    PriyaHe made my brother cry.
    YouOh.
PriyaYes, he referred to Hassan as ‘a disgrace’ after he discovered my brother’s love of poetry. Apparently, this made Hassan ‘a useless, irredeemable fop.’
PriyaIt took my brother years to get over that.
PriyaSo I hope my uncle rests in peace, Dressmaker.
PriyaBut I am not inclined to be sorry about his passing, and there is certainly no need for you to mourn him in my stead.
  • YouHow polite of you.
PriyaI can be a proper lady on rare occasions.
PriyaIn truth, I would love to forego the whole affair. I’m going to spend the entire funeral fending off the advances of my brother’s horde of new suitors.
PriyaSuitresses…? Well, women who wish to marry him.
PriyaOr rather, women who wish to marry a duke, and find that he is the nearest available option.
YouCan he not fend them off himself?
PriyaHassan suffers from being far too nice, I’m afraid. He’s a sensitive sort...which is to say, a gazelle in the lion’s den.
PriyaThat’s why I am here.
PriyaYou see, my plan is to strike fear into the hearts of these shameless fortune chasers. I must look intimidating enough to drive them off.
PriyaAdmittedly, this…isn’t my usual style. But I could be frightening!
PriyaI could!
PriyaDressmaker, you have to make me look fierce for this funeral. You will have 300 for the commission.
PriyaI need a dress that is formal and gothic. It must not be too colourful, of course. Imagine, someone wearing a bright dress to a funeral!
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

PriyaOh, perfect! Yes, I can see the suitresses cowering before me already.
Priya“Don’t you swish your skirts at my brother!”
PriyaHeehee. It would be quite a painting.
PriyaI appreciate your artistic efforts, Dressmaker. I’m sure we’ll see each other again soon.
PriyaBy the way, if you run into Prudence Mortimer? Tell that lady that I’ve got my eye on her.
PriyaYou can’t miss her; she always wears the most hideous hat. I know she’s plotting something, but I won’t let her come anywhere near my brother.

If the dress fails

PriyaHmm.
PriyaColour me…uncertain about this look.
PriyaI suppose I’ll have to practise scowling even harder.
PriyaI appreciate your artistic efforts, Dressmaker. I’m sure we’ll see each other again soon.
PriyaBy the way, if you run into Prudence Mortimer? Tell that lady that I’ve got my eye on her.

When the commission arrives

PriyaGood afternoon!
PriyaNo, wait, it is still morning.
PriyaGood morning!
YouAre you all right?
PriyaI am very well, and it’s sweet of you to ask. In fact, I am excellent. Just a little nervous. But excited.
PriyaBut nervous.
PriyaBut excited!
YouBut nervous?
PriyaExactly. I knew you would understand.
YouIs this about your brother?
PriyaWhat? Oh, no, no.
PriyaNo,

If the dress for Fierce Funeral failed:

PriyaAlthough your dress might not have made me appear quite as intimidating as I had hoped.

Otherwise:

PriyaThanks to your most intimidating dress, Hassan has managed to escape Prudence Mortimer unscathed so far.
PriyaDid you see her at the Women’s Sporting Day Contest? Her physical acuity was remarkable. I had no idea she was that athletic.
Priya…Hassan will need to work on his fitness. If he tried to flee, Prudence could probably run him down like an endurance predator.
PriyaAnyway, I must put the wretched woman out of my mind. I wished to congratulate you! Your dresses are the talk of the town.
PriyaIt’s so impressive. Personally, I’ve never had a knack for textile arts — I think it’s the needles. They’re so...sharp and small.
PriyaNot to mention all the mathematics involved, my goodness.
PriyaPleats? French seams? Button plackets? Corseting? For me, it’s simply a disaster waiting to happen.
YouYou certainly sound knowledgeable.
PriyaWell, I did try it out for a little while. More tools in my arsenal, more colour for my palette.
PriyaI think working in different mediums expands your capacity for expression as an artist. As a matter of fact, I’m currently learning beadcraft. Very fiddly business.
PriyaBefore that, I quite liked sculpture! Although, if I’m going to be frank with you, I might just have enjoyed swinging around a heavy mallet.
PriyaIt feels so empoweringly violent!

You pick one answer:

  • YouUh………huh.
    PriyaYou should try it!
  • YouI should probably warn Prudence about this mallet.
    PriyaOh, don’t be silly.
PriyaI probably couldn’t catch her anyway.
  • YouHow wonderful for stress relief!
    PriyaYou should try it!
PriyaIn any case, my latest exhibition opens tomorrow, and I hope it will be well received.
PriyaAs a fellow artist, I’m sure you understand.
PriyaApparently, a renowned critic will be attending in secret.
PriyaI’m anxious that they might think paintings of flowers are a bit…staid.
PriyaSo I’m nervous.
PriyaBut excited!
PriyaBut—
YouI think I have perceived your emotional state.
PriyaI need a dress for the grand opening. Do you think you could help?
PriyaI want to communicate my artistic style, so I would love an eveningwear dress that’s romantic and a little playful, but still elegant. I can offer you 500 for the job.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

PriyaMarvelous!
PriyaFrom one artist to another, I can’t thank you enough. You captured my vision perfectly.
PriyaIf you can spare the time, you are most welcome to attend the exhibition.
PriyaWish me luck!

If the dress fails

PriyaOh. Oh dear. We might have some…artistic differences of opinion here.
PriyaI probably should have been more specific in my commission, but...
PriyaThis exhibition is very important to me. I can't wear this dress.
YouI understand. Let me see if I can alter it to suit you better.

The dress goes back on your table, so you can alter it.

PriyaThank you. I'm sure you're almost there!

When the commission arrives

PriyaIsn’t it a beautiful day?
PriyaThe sun is shining, the birds are singing, and the Spring Fete is over for another year.
YouYou don’t enjoy the festivities?
PriyaOh, as a rule, I would much rather be painting. The Fete involves an awful lot of standing around and nodding politely.
PriyaOr repelling emboldened suitresses with designs upon my brother.
PriyaThe ladies are especially amorous in early springtime. Must be something in the air.
PriyaNot that the gentlemen are any better. Ugh.
YouDo you have a lot of admirers?
Priya…a few.
Priya………rather a few.
PriyaAt the Fete, I spent half my evening attempting to get away from Sir Ortham Buke.
PriyaGoodness, but the man’s a bore. He suffers from the irrepressible urge to prove himself the smartest person in any room at all times.
PriyaAnything I say must be corrected, no matter how trivial the statement.
Priya“The chrysanthemum arrangements are lovely this year.”
Priya<pend>“Well, my dearest Priya, it is actually pronounced chrysanthemum."</pend>
PriyaAHHH!
PriyaDressmaker, I was on the verge of physical violence.
YouThis seems to be a worrying trend for you.
PriyaBut then, my salvation arrived in the least likely form.
PriyaPrudence Mortimer, of all people.
PriyaWhile Sir Buke was explaining <pend>‘decentralised currency’</pend> to me, she swooped down on us.
PriyaShe turned up her nose at Sir Buke, and told him that he was “an affront to the very notion of charisma” and that he “had bored the Lady Priya long enough with this funny money business.”
PriyaSir Buke was speechless. He looked like a man who had been unexpectedly slapped across the face with a salmon.
PriyaBefore he could recover, Prudence grasped my arm and dragged me away. I could have kissed her!
PriyaThen, of course, she ruined her gallantry by declaring that she would never allow such dullards to accost me “once we become sisters.”
PriyaAHHHH!

You pick one answer:

  • YouIt’s Prudence — of course she had an ulterior motive.
  • YouI think she was trying…to be nice?
  • YouI’m sorry you were disappointed.
PriyaShe is infuriating. Every time I lower my guard, I discover she’s been concocting a new scheme to snare my brother.
PriyaHer dress at the Fete was very fetching, I’ll admit.
PriyaThank goodness the Fete is done. What I need now is to cool my head, and forget all this nonsense.
PriyaI am going on an artistic retreat, Dressmaker. A few days in a woodland cottage will restore my spirits.
PriyaWould you make me a daytime dress for this excursion? I would like it to be inspired by the forest — something floral and romantic. I can offer you 500.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

PriyaOh, this is perfect! Wonderful.
PriyaI knew I could rely on you, Dressmaker!
PriyaI cannot wait for some peace and quiet.

If the dress fails

Priya…
PriyaThis dress does indeed evoke a sense of the ‘natural…’
Priya…in the context of ‘natural disaster.’
PriyaIt’s a good thing that I will be alone in the woods, and no one will see me in this catastrophe.
PriyaGood day, Dressmaker.

When the commission arrives

PriyaHah!
PriyaDressmaker, it appears that I was guarding my brother against the wrong woman.
PriyaWhile I was fending off Prudence, Marie sneaked right past me.
PriyaYou look away for one moment—ONE moment!—and your brother is already betrothed.
PriyaHAH!
YouAre you angry?
PriyaAngry? Why, of course not. Why on earth would I be angry? What I am, Dressmaker, is enormously amused.
PriyaThis whole time, I thought Marie was petitioning my brother to found a Woman’s Institute or something.
PriyaI didn’t realise they were, you know…
Priya…making eyes at each other.

You pick one answer:

  • YouPositively scandalous!
PriyaI know! Heehee. I love a little scandal.
  • YouI’m sure they were both perfectly proper.
PriyaYes, yes, but let me have my fun.
  • YouI heard there was poetry involved.
PriyaNO! Oh, I must find out more. I will be able to embarrass Hassan for years.
PriyaThe truth is that they are rather perfect for one another. I don’t think I’ve ever seen my brother so happy.
PriyaHe would probably kiss the ground Marie walks upon.
PriyaAnd Marie, well…I could never doubt her integrity. She clearly loves Hassan for himself, not because he is the Duke.
PriyaThat’s what I felt he deserved all along. For someone to see him as a person instead of an opportunity.
PriyaBesides which, with the strength of her passions and convictions, Marie will make a remarkable Duchess in her own right.
PriyaI am happy for them. For both of them.
YouAnd you can finally stop fending off the suitresses!
PriyaIt will be like going on a long, relaxing holiday. Bliss. I will be able to focus entirely on my art.
PriyaAlthough…
PriyaNow that Hassan is no longer eligible, people will turn their attention to his sister’s marriage prospects.
Priya……
PriyaI find the thought of marriage a little disquieting, Dressmaker. I don’t feel it would suit me.
Priya………
PriyaWell! Maybe I can pursue spinsterhood instead. I’ll claim to be married to my art.
PriyaBut first, I will be a maid of honour. And for that, I will require your services.
PriyaI need a blue dress with ribbons. Although I don’t want to upstage Marie, it should still be fairly romantic. Playful too — this is a joyous occasion, after all.
PriyaWill 1000 suit you?

If the dress passes

PriyaSo charming! I’ll be the best dressed guest in attendance.
PriyaWhat would I do without you, Dressmaker?
Priya……
Priya…………
YouWhat is it?
PriyaNothing really. I just wondered…
PriyaWell, I don’t suppose you have seen Prudence recently?
PriyaI am a little concerned about her, that’s all. She didn’t take the news that Hassan is marrying Marie…well.
PriyaIn fact, she seemed genuinely hurt. It’s strange, because I never had the sense she even liked my brother.
PriyaDid I misjudge her?
PriyaSorry, this is not your problem at all.
PriyaThank you again for the dress.

If the dress fails

PriyaOoof.

When the commission arrives

PriyaHello, Dressmaker.
YouPriya? What is the matter?
PriyaYou are always so kind in asking. Nothing is wrong, really. I just feel a little low at the moment.
PriyaI’m struggling with my art.
PriyaThat is, I am struggling with the point of my art. I always felt it was about communicating with others, but…
PriyaBut my art doesn’t communicate anything.
YouI’m sure that isn’t true.
PriyaI don’t know. I feel like I’m speaking, but cannot be understood. Is it ever like that for you, with your dressmaking?
PriyaMaybe I’m just uninspired at the moment. Or maybe I’m just not very good.
PriyaI’m experimenting with portraiture. That’s all I feel moved to create, currently. It certainly doesn’t help that the only subject I really want to paint is Pru—
PriyaNever mind. I don’t know what has gotten into me.
PriyaNo, actually, I do know.
PriyaHave you spoken to Prudence?
YouShe asked me to make her a dress for Marie’s wedding.
PriyaA dress? A dress?
YouIt is…sort of what I do here.
PriyaOh, don’t act innocent. You didn’t make her a dress, you made her a statement. You made her a spectacle.
PriyaShe looked devastating. What were you thinking? What was she thinking?
PriyaDo you know the worst part? She would not speak a word to me at the wedding — as if it was all my fault.
PriyaWhat did she SAY to you, Dressmaker?

You pick one answer:

  • YouSorry, Priya, but our conversation was private. I won’t break Prudence’s trust.
    PriyaBut—
    Priya…
PriyaNo, I understand. Of course. Of course.
  • YouShe said she wanted to prove that she was better than everyone else.
PriyaShe—ridiculous woman! Oh, I could throttle her.
PriyaNo, no, I don’t mean that. I am only—I don’t understand her at all.
  • YouShe said you have perfect hair.
PriyaWhat? What does my hair have to do with anything? Please be serious.
  • YouI think Prudence is under a lot more pressure than people realise.
PriyaThat may be the case, but how am I to know if she won’t talk to me? Does she expect me to read her mind?
PriyaI apologise. I am frustrated.
PriyaIt’s only that she looked so unbearably sad.
PriyaI must speak to Prudence. I just have to find the right way to express myself.
PriyaWhich is much easier said than done, hah. I don’t even know where to start with her.
Priya……
PriyaI think I need to collect my thoughts first.
PriyaI'm thinking I might go to Fiona's stargazing event. Maybe that will help to clear my head.
PriyaAfter all, other artists have often found inspiration in the night sky.
PriyaWould you make me a dress for the evening? It must be cute, romantic and warm. I would be happy to pay 500 for the job.

PriyaHm. I don’t think this is your best. But it will be dark, so I don’t suppose it matters much.

When the commission arrives

PriyaHeehee.
PriyaHello again, Dressmaker.
YouYou seem happier than when I last saw you.
PriyaWell, you could say that.
PriyaIt’s because I have a secret.
PriyaAsk me about my secret. Go on.
YouWhat’s your secret?
PriyaI am...
PriyaEloping!
PriyaI decided that I’m not entirely set on artistic spinsterhood, after all.
PriyaVery romantic and mysterious of me, isn’t it?
PriyaGo on! Go on, ask. Ask who I’m marrying.
PriyaGo on!

You pick one answer:

  • YouWho are you marrying, Priya?
    PriyaPRUDENCE!
  • YouThis all seems VERY sudden.
    PriyaPRUDENCE!
  • YouI have a suspicion…
    PriyaPRUDENCE!
PriyaHeehee.
PriyaYour expression is very funny.
YouAre you quite serious?
PriyaEntirely! I am the sister of the Duke, and at liberty to do whatever I please.
PriyaAnd what I please to do is marry Prudence.
PriyaDressmaker, where are my congratulations??? I demand them!

You pick one answer:

  • YouI was just astonished. Congratulations! This is wonderful news!
    PriyaMuch better!
  • YouI think Prudence might be wearing off on you already.
PriyaYou jest, but I was actually moved to try on her awful hat this morning.
PriyaI can report that it was stunningly ugly on me.
  • YouHa-hah! I knew you liked her all along. I knew it!
    PriyaNo, you didn’t.
    YouI did too!
PriyaI was far too discreet, thank you very much.
PriyaFor a while, I was terribly afraid I might lose her.
PriyaHer wretched brother threw her out, you know. By the time I caught up with her, she was boarding the night coach to Tulleton.
PriyaThen, of course, she was too stubborn to hear me. I had to cause quite the public scene before she deigned to listen.
YouWhat did you do?
PriyaOh, I stood in the path of the coach horses and refused to move until she got out of the carriage.
PriyaIt worked rather well, actually, although the coachman was livid.
PriyaApparently trampling a Duke’s sister would have been just awful for his business.
YouPriya!
PriyaOh, it was fine. The animals stopped.
PriyaIn my defence, I wasn’t in full possession of my senses at the time. The idea of losing Prudence made me quite desperate.
PriyaI wanted so badly to save her.
PriyaDo you know, no one has ever made me laugh like she does? Underneath all her ridiculousness, she is profoundly sweet.
YouYou might be a little ridiculous too.
PriyaYou must be thinking of the wrong person. But…but I do feel all shall be well now.
PriyaDo you know, that the night I went stargazing, there was a meteor shower?
PriyaI climbed the hill behind the orchard alone. As I reached the summit, I looked up and saw a shooting star sweep across the sky.
PriyaIn the moment, it felt like a little miracle, meant only for me.
PriyaAnd when I looked down again, there she was. Prudence.
PriyaLike an answer — and the only answer I wanted.
PriyaSo! I shall require a wedding dress from you. Do you feel up to the challenge?
YouI cannot wait.
PriyaExcellent! Will you take 3000?
PriyaObviously, the dress should be elegant, formal and romantic. But I also want it to shine, star-like, for the wedding.
PriyaA celestial gown, Dressmaker — as a tribute to the shooting star I saw that night, and the silent wish I made.

PriyaYou seem so busy these days. I think you must have dressed every woman in town by now.

YouI try not to let fame go to my head.
PriyaAnd that means you must have also received your fair share of strange commissions, not so?
YouYou have no idea.
PriyaI only ask because I myself have received the most peculiar commission.
PriyaUsually, I am asked to paint landscapes or still lifes. Every now and again, someone may want a family portrait.
PriyaBut this time, an anonymous patron wrote to request a new subject.
PriyaI have never been asked to paint a chaise lounge before.
PriyaTypically, furniture is not a much requested subject.
PriyaI wonder if it will be possible to create something evocative with negative space. A tragically empty chaise lounge, perhaps.
PriyaHmm. Maybe I will understand this subject better if I dressed like the sort of person who has a passion for a fainting couch.
PriyaCould you make me a dress for swooning, Dressmaker? I’m visualising ethereal fabrics and an elegant silhouette. It should waft romantically.
