When the commission arrives

AdoraHello.
AdoraYou are new here, is that right?

You pick one answer:

  • YouYes, I’m still finding my feet in Twillford. It is difficult to keep track of all my new clients.
AdoraYou do appear greatly in demand.
  • YouOn the contrary, I’m well-established. I have made at least a dozen dresses already.
    AdoraIs that a lot?
    YouYes!
AdoraHmmm. I suspect you might revise that opinion in the future.
  • YouYou seem quite young to be visiting a modiste on your own.
AdoraOh, I’m older than I appear.
AdoraBut isn’t it a lot of pressure, all these commissions? Don’t you worry about, you know…
AdoraDisappointing people.

You pick one answer:

  • YouAnyone disappointed by my work is wrong.
    AdoraThat’s certainly…a perspective.
  • YouNo, because if a commission is rejected, I can fix it.
AdoraI never considered that. How comforting.
  • YouA little bit.
    AdoraOnly…only a little bit?
AdoraIt isn’t a constant crushing pressure on your lungs, a tension haunting every moment of every day?
    AdoraHypothetically, that is.
    You…………
    Adora…………
    AdoraAhem.
AdoraAs it happens, I also arrived in town recently. I’m eager to get to know the local people and attractions as myself— I mean, for myself.
YouAnd you are…?
AdoraMe? Oh, right, of course. My name is…
AdoraAh…door…
Adorauh…thimble…?
Adora…thread.
YouAdora Thimblethread?
AdoraThat’s right!
AdoraAdora Thimblethread.
YouAre you sure about that?
AdoraAbsolutely. My friends call me Addy. Let’s move the conversation along!
AdoraI have heard that Twillford is hosting a grand sporting competition next week. The Twillford Women’s Sporting Day Contest!
AdoraThere are to be archery, running, weightlifting, fencing, and swimming trials. As I have trained in all those disciplines, I plan to take part.
AdoraI will need a suitable dress for the competition. I would favour a simple and playful garment, and it should be made from a lightweight, breathable fabric — perhaps cotton? May I offer you 1000 for this task?
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

AdoraWonderful! I can’t wait to compete in this dress.
AdoraI hope to do your work credit, Dressmaker. I’ll do my best to win.
AdoraPlease forgive me if I don’t.
YouUh…sure.
AdoraThank you!

If the dress fails

AdoraThis dress feels like a disadvantage.
AdoraThe other competitors won’t laugh at me, will they?
YouDon't worry. I'll have another look at this dress, and see if I can improve it.

The dress goes back on your table, so you can alter it.

AdoraOh thank you! That's very kind.
AdoraI look forward to seeing the result!

When the commission arrives

AdoraGood afternoon, Dressmaker.
YouGreetings, Shelf Stitchtable.
AdoraI have no idea what you are talking about. My name is Adora Thimblethread — which is a perfectly normal and not at all unusual name.
YouWhatever you say, Button Silkstairs.
Adora…you have a terrible sense of humour.
AdoraNevertheless, I would like us to be friends. I want to get to know everyone in Twillford better!
AdoraAlthough…recently…
AdoraEver since the Women’s Sporting Day Contest, I’ve felt…observed.
AdoraIt feels as though someone is watching me from the shadows.
AdoraOr…
Adora…something.
YouAhh, stop! I can’t handle ghost stories.
AdoraA fell force lurks in the darkness.
YouI am not listening, la-la-la-la.
AdoraIt creeps toward the dressmaker’s shop, fangs gleaming and wet—
YouBoo! A disappointment!
AdoraAhhhh!!!
AdoraI’ll fix it! I promise I can do better! Please don’t think I—
Adora………
Adora…………………………
AdoraThat wasn’t very nice, but I concede I had it coming.
YouYou really are that scared of disappointing other people?
AdoraIsn’t everyone?
AdoraNo one loves a disappointment. I don’t want people to look at me and see a waste.
YouA waste?
AdoraOf potential, effort, money, time. That’s what a disappointment is — the long shadow cast by hope.
AdoraNever mind that. And I’m sure I’m only imagining my mysterious watcher, anyway.
AdoraI’m planning to attend the latest exhibition of a local artist this evening. Have you met Priya Summer? She’s a rising star of the floralescent scene.
AdoraFrom what I have heard, her floral compositions are remarkable. Highly provocative.
YouYou seem to like art.
AdoraI moonlight as a critic from time to time.
YouWait, you’re Priya’s secret art critic?!
AdoraNot under my own name, of course.
YouYes, I’m sure no one has ever heard of Adora Thimblethread.
Adora………
AdoraRegardless, I am eager to see the exhibition. I will need a dress for the opening.
AdoraWould you make me an eveningwear dress that is formal and romantic? I wish to look stylish and fashionable — think avant-garde. I’ll give you 1500.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

AdoraThis is perfect! I will be dazzlingly stylish.
AdoraLet’s go see how Miss Summer's art measures up!

If the dress fails

AdoraHmm.
AdoraIt is clear you do not attend many gallery openings, Dressmaker.
AdoraOn the bright side, I certainly won’t be recognised!

When the commission arrives

AdoraHello again, Dressmaker.
AdoraIt has been a whirlwind of a time, hasn’t it? It’s so easy to get swept up in all of Twillford’s troubles.
AdoraEasy to feel overwhelmed by all the toil and struggle.
AdoraTell me, do you believe in destiny?
YouI don’t think so. Do you?
AdoraI think…I think circumstances can feel like destiny sometimes.
AdoraWhether we are born rich or poor, or whether we possess natural aptitudes or advantages — those factors are outside our control.
AdoraThey can set us on paths not of our choosing. And even if we struggle to break from those paths, they continue to define us.
AdoraDefine other people’s expectations of us.
AdoraI have been…trying to become someone else. Someone other than my circumstances.
AdoraAnd yet, at every turn, I feel…
AdoraTrapped. Afraid.
YouIs there something I could do to help?
AdoraNo, I don’t think so, although you are kind to offer.
AdoraI must figure out my own way forward — whether that’s on the path laid by circumstance, or the one I make for myself.
AdoraFiona is organising a stargazing evening at her orchard this week. I intend to attend, and I’ll make my choice then.
AdoraI’m sorry for all the secrecy. I’m sure I sound ridiculous to you.
AdoraIn any case… would you make me a dress that is inspired by the moon? I would like it to be romantic, elegant, and warm, and it should feature silver elements. I can offer you 2000.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

AdoraOh, this dress is like something from a dream.
AdoraThank you, truly.
AdoraI’m sure we’ll see each other again very soon. When we do, I hope I’ll be able to tell you the truth about myself.
AdoraI hope…I hope you won’t be disappointed in me.

If the dress fails

Adora…it will be dark, won’t it?
AdoraAt the stargazing event, that is.
AdoraAnd if I don a large hat, no one will see that I am the one wearing this bizarre dress.

When the commission arrives

AdoraHello, Dressmaker. It is me again.
YouAdora! Back so soon?
AdoraWell, you are the only dressmaker in town. If one requires a new gown, options are limited.
YouRude!
AdoraI am only teasing. You occasionally make dresses that are passably attractive.
YouStill rude! The youth today have no manners.
AdoraI am coming of age in two weeks, you know. I am not that young.
AdoraAnyway, I wanted to let you know that I made my decision. About my future circumstances, that is.
YouYour mysterious destiny.
AdoraThat’s right. At the stargazing event, I realised that all my recent choices have been made out of fear.
AdoraI told myself I was defying destiny, rejecting expectations, but, really, I was just frightened of responsibility. I wasn’t running to anything; I didn’t have any plans or ambitions. I was just running away.
AdoraBut seeing the struggles of other women in Twillford — that made me realise it. I want to help people. I can help people — not out of a sense of duty, but one of aspiration.
AdoraI still don’t really believe in destiny, but I do believe in choices. And mine is made.
AdoraI need your help breaking into the royal palace.
YouWHAT?
AdoraIt’s all part of my plan.
AdoraDon’t worry, I can handle the athletic and technical aspects of this enterprise. Climbing walls, evading guards, and sneaking through windows is easy. But I need you to provide the aesthetics in the form of a suitable dress.
YouI am not helping you pull off a heist!!
AdoraOh, it’s fine. You’ll see.
AdoraA travelling circus will be performing for the royal court this week. I intend to use their presence as cover for my infiltration.
AdoraPlease make me an acrobat’s dress that is glamorous, playful and colourful. Maybe it could include a dramatic, swirling cape or skirt? To complete the effect, the dress must feature sequins. For your efforts, I can pay you 2000.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

AdoraI expected no less from you, Dressmaker.
AdoraIt’s perfect.
AdoraWhen this is all over, I’ll explain everything. But for now, please know that I am so grateful to you.

If the dress fails

AdoraOh. Well.
AdoraI guess the aesthetic component of my plan was the least important part.
AdoraStill… a pity. I had hoped to look dashing during my adventure.

Crowning Glory

When the commission arrives

AdoraGood afternoon, Dressmaker.

You pick one answer:

  • YouHah! I was onto you from the start, you know.
AdoraFrom what I heard, you thought Fiona was the princess.
    YouNonsense.
AdoraShe would be a formidable leader, though. I am considering offering her the role of Minister of Agriculture.
  • YouWhat would you like for your birthday, Princess?
    AdoraOh.
    AdoraYou remembered.
YouIt’s something of a national occasion.
AdoraI guess so. But the coronation doesn’t really seem…
    YouLike a birthday party?
AdoraLike it’s about me at all.
AdoraWhich is fine! It’s just…nice that you remembered.
  • YouGood afternoon, your Royal Highness.
    AdoraAdora, if you please.
AdoraI suppose I should formally introduce myself.
AdoraMy name is Sophie Vasar, Princess of Hemstitch, and heir to the royal throne. It is a pleasure to meet you.
AdoraYou may, of course, still call me Adora Thimblethread.
YouI thought friends were allowed to call you ‘Addy.’
Adora…I will allow it.
YouIs it true that you were kidnapped?
AdoraWell…no. I staged my own kidnapping to escape the palace.
AdoraEveryone expected so much from me. I needed time alone to think about the future. One thing led to the next, and, well…
AdoraI quite enjoyed being Adora.
AdoraOf course, people would have been furious if they discovered that the kidnapping was a ruse, and I’ve been gallivanting around Twillford for months unchaperoned.
AdoraSo I decided to also stage my own heroic rescue, and break myself back into the palace.
YouHow…convoluted of you.
AdoraIt worked remarkably well.
AdoraAnyway, I apologise for all the guards outside your shop today. I am now…thoroughly chaperoned.
AdoraSuch a hassle.
YouThey’re probably worried you’ll be kidnapped again.
AdoraYes. I suppose I brought that on myself.
AdoraAnyway, I needed to thank you — for all you have done for me, but also for all the help you have provided to the citizens of Twillford.
AdoraIn fact, I have a little surprise planned to show my appreciation. But first, a commission!
AdoraMy coronation gown, to be precise. As you might imagine, it’s quite important.
AdoraThe occasion demands a dress that is elaborate, formal, and adorned with extravagant quantities of lace and trim. It should be gold and white, as those are the royal colours.
AdoraI can offer you a princessly sum of 5000.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

Adora…………magnificent.
AdoraDo you think…that is—can I really wear such a remarkable dress?
AdoraI know I am to ascend to the throne, but underneath the title, underneath the role, I am still just me. How do I become the woman who wears this?
AdoraIt’s so beautiful. And I am…
YouYou will always be far, far more remarkable than a dress. Or a crown. Or a throne.
AdoraYou really believe that?
YouThere is no doubt in my mind, your Highness. You will never be a disappointment in my eyes.
Adora………
AdoraThank you.
AdoraI’m going to keep Adora. Whenever the palace life overwhelms me, I will stage another kidnapping, and return to Twillford.
AdoraAnd you’ll be in charge of making my disguises.
AdoraWe’ll see each other again soon.
YouI’ll be waiting.
AdoraSo long, then.
AdoraAnd thank you.

If the dress fails

Adora.......
YouIt isn't right, is it?

The dress goes back on your table, so you can alter it.

AdoraNo, it's fine, it's just...
YouI don't want to disappoint you either, Addy. Let me try to make it better.
AdoraThank you. I really appreciate you going to so much trouble.

When the commission arrives

AdoraDressmaker, do you speak Vampurian?
YouVampurian?
AdoraYes. Lady Vivian approached me, and enquired whether I might be able to assist her with a Vampurian translation.
AdoraI am fluent in eight languages, so she wondered whether I might speak Vampurian as well.
YouWhy are you fluent in eight languages?
AdoraOh. Well, I had a very rigorous and comprehensive education.
AdoraShe showed me the text in question. It was written in an unfamiliar alphabet — strange, menacing letters. They seemed almost malignant.
AdoraVivian appeared disappointed that I couldn’t read the text. I received the impression that she was testing me.
AdoraAnd I must have failed.
AdoraI almost never fail.
AdoraI do not like it.
AdoraNow I feel sad. Would you make me a cheerful, playful day dress to lift my spirits? Green. Perhaps…perhaps frog-themed.
YouFrog-themed??
AdoraI like frogs! I will pay you 1000.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

AdoraWonderful!
AdoraIt’s adorable. I feel much better already. If I set my mind to it, I am sure I can master Vampurian.
AdoraAnd then I won’t be a disappointment anymore!
AdoraThank you, Dressmaker!

If the dress fails

AdoraWhy do I feel even sadder?
AdoraIt must be because this dress is insufficiently froggy. Or maybe…insufficiently dressy.
AdoraIt’s sufficiently disappointing, that’s for sure.

When the commission arrives

AdoraPosture. Posture. Must improve my posture.
YouGood morning, Adora.
AdoraHold on. I’m concentrating.
AdoraPrudence told me I should pretend I am wearing a ‘hatful of eggs’ when walking.
AdoraThis will grant me a fine, upright posture, because I must not upset my hat eggs.
YouYour posture seems fine to me.
AdoraShhh. Do not disturb my eggs.
AdoraI have been taking etiquette lessons from Prudence.
YouDon’t let her rub off on you.
AdoraBut I like Prudence. She is funny, and she has excellent posture.
AdoraShe is most kind-hearted too. Last week, she said that I reminded her of one of her nieces.
AdoraSo I am determined to impress her.
AdoraI would like to commission a dress she would approve of. Would you make me something that is formal and elegant? A ladylike day dress.

AdoraNo, I must not get too excited. My eggs!

AdoraOh, this is pretty! Thank you for taking so much trouble.
