When the commission arrives

VivianMy, my.
VivianFresh blood in Twillford.
YouEr…good evening…
VivianThe last dressmaker left town almost ten years ago. She was a sweet creature. Soft. Obliging. Eager to please.
VivianNo one has heard from her since. One wonders whether she…met trouble on the road.
YouUm…
VivianAlthough now we have you instead, don’t we? A delectable new dressmaker.
VivianMmm. I suspect you will be even more to my taste than dear departed Mina.
Vivian!
VivianThis beautiful creature is yours?
YouYes, that is my cat.
VivianHow disappointing. The feline does not return my tender feelings.
YouSorry, she has never done that before.
VivianMm? Well, she has likely never before encountered any of my…sort.
VivianI am the Lady Vivian Duskbourne. And you are…?

You pick one answer:

  • YouWorried about my cat.
VivianMost gorgeous nocturnal predators can take care of themselves, you know.
  • YouYour humble servant.
VivianMy, my. Eager to serve already?
  • YouGoing to buy garlic.
    VivianBut whatever for?
    Vivian…………
VivianI anticipate becoming much more closely acquainted, Dressmaker. Let me offer you a commission.
VivianI am often abroad at night — why don’t you dress me in lush velvet? I want something risqué, gothic, and glamorous. As for your payment…you’ll have 700.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

VivianHmm.
VivianYou’ve pleased me, Dressmaker.
VivianContinue to do so.
VivianGood night, and sweet dreams.

If the dress fails

VivianI feel a certain kinship with your cat.
VivianLooking at this dress, I also want to hiss.
VivianGood night, Dressmaker. Sweet dreams.

When the commission arrives

VivianWe meet again.
Vivian…
VivianHow hurtful. Few spurn my love.
VivianBribery may be the key. Tell me, does your beautiful familiar have a favoured meal?

You pick one answer:

  • YouShe loves a bowl of fresh cream.
VivianSuch decadence. She deserves no less.
  • YouCarpaccio.
VivianTruly? We have so much in common.
  • YouDo not bribe my cat. She is on a diet.
VivianNonsense. Such a precious creature is not to be denied her pleasures.
VivianI am determined to win her affections.
YouI think you are determined to steal my cat.
VivianWhat a baseless accusation.
VivianWhat if something unfortunate was to happen to you, and your familiar needed a new home?
VivianI am merely…considering possibilities.
YouThese possibilities concern me.
VivianOh, is it fear that causes your breath to quicken, and your heart to flutter? How…adorable.
VivianLet me divert you, my little lamb. Were you witness to the recent sports contest? I hear it was surprisingly well attended.
VivianMy sources suggest that Alice Wren was spirited, if physically weak. However, Prudence Mortimer dazzled the crowd with her performance.
VivianOne wonders how a socialite developed such strength…but no matter. Mortimer was born and raised in this town; she is no threat to me.
VivianHowever, word reached me of a new athlete…this mysterious ‘Adora Thimblethread…’
VivianI haven’t heard that name before.
YouNo one has heard that name before.
VivianThimblethread is young, but she won every single event. Unlikely, don’t you think? Unless there is more to her than meets the eye.
VivianSuch a powerful being cannot be allowed a foothold in my territory!
YouYour…territory?
Vivian…
VivianOh, you must have misheard, lamb. Don’t worry. Put it out of your mind.
VivianAnyway, my sources suggest Thimblethread plans to attend Priya Summer’s latest art exhibition.
VivianWhat kind of self-respecting human youth is interested in gallery openings? Pah! Careless mistake, Thimblethread. Your ruse won’t work on me.
VivianI might also go to this exhibition. If the mood strikes me. To see the paintings. And to watch over our newest…resident of the town.
VivianLamb, would you make a dress for me? It should be sequined, and suitably glamorous for the occasion. Something risqué, goth, and elaborate. Satisfy me, and I’ll reward you with 500.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

VivianMy, my.
VivianYou’ve done well, lamb. This dress fits me wonderfully.
VivianCareful. I might grow dangerously fond of you.
VivianGood night.

If the dress fails

VivianNow, why would you disappoint me like this, lamb?
VivianDon’t you know that it’s in your interests to make me happy?
VivianBe more careful, won’t you?
VivianFor your own sake.

When the commission arrives

VivianA beautiful evening, isn’t—
Vivian…
VivianReally. I can’t be that offensive.

If you answered She loves a bowl of fresh cream. in Art Appreciator:

VivianOne would think that my daily offering of fresh cream might soften her heart.

Otherwise:

If you answered Carpaccio. in Art Appreciator:

VivianOne would think that my daily offering of fine carpaccio might soften her heart.

Otherwise:

VivianOne would think that my daily offering of a diet-friendly treat might soften her heart.
YouYou know, it’s interesting that you only ever visit me in the evenings.
VivianSunlight is bad for the complexion.
YouAnd I hear you are helping Alice with her séance.
VivianShe asked politely.
VivianAnd then less politely, and much more loudly. The exact phrasing was “UNBAR THE GATES TO THE UNDERWORLD, EVIL NIGHT LADY.”
VivianI found that…charmingly forthright.
VivianBesides, how could I refuse? A sweet thing like that shouldn’t meddle with the dark arts unsupervised.
VivianIf this séance is so important to her, who am I to turn her away?
YouThat’s…surprisingly nice of you.
VivianOh, but I am very nice, lamb.
VivianYou don’t think I’m a baddie, do you?
YouNo comment.
VivianHah. So uptight.
VivianYou needn’t worry — Alice is too pure-hearted for me to corrupt. She is safe with me.
VivianBesides, I know what it means to be different. Alice is all alone, and I feel…I am moved to watch over her.
YouYou’re quite soft for a baddie.
VivianMind yourself, lamb. I still bite.
VivianNow, let’s see if you can satisfy my latest demand. I want a dress for a funeral.
YouNOT ANOTHER ONE.
VivianWhat a poor attitude.
YouWHO DIED NOW?
VivianOh, no one. I’m not attending a funeral, but mourning garb suits a coffin, and I require new sleepwear.
You?
VivianImagine me the doe-eyed widow whose spouse died under unexplained circumstances. This dress should be risqué, goth, and cool enough to be worn in the daytime. Silk, naturally. I always sleep in silk. Here is 300.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

VivianOh, very good, lamb.
VivianYou understood me perfectly.
VivianI will get the most wonderful beauty rest in this dress.
VivianGood night, now. Sweet dreams.

If the dress fails

VivianYou expect me to wear this?
VivianHmm.
VivianHow interesting of you.
VivianBrave, even.
Vivian…and a grave mistake.
VivianSleep with one eye open, lamb. That’s my advice.

When the commission arrives

VivianHello, lamb.
VivianGoodbye, kitty.
VivianOne day, your rejection will no longer sting.
VivianBut I mustn’t get distracted.
VivianHave you heard, little lamb, that Adora Thimblethread is on the move again?
VivianMy sources tell me that she intends to take part in the upcoming stargazing event.
VivianA likely story!
YouMaybe Adora just wants to see some stars?
VivianHah!
VivianAside from her physical capabilities and artistic knowledge, are you aware that Thimblethread is also an expert in languages, arithmetic, music, history, and politics?
VivianDoes that extensive a spread of mastery belong to a young girl?
VivianWell, I am not deceived. Her attendance at the stargazing event is cover for some other midnight errand.
VivianA ritual, perhaps. Or a summoning. She rallies her forces even now.
VivianShe means to take over Twillford and drive me out!
YouTo be honest, I’m not sure she knows you exist.
VivianI won’t allow it. This is my territory. This is my home.
VivianMake me a dress to attend this stargazing event. It should be warlike and fearsome — let it drive all to their knees before the undisputed Queen of the Night. Elaborate, goth, glamorous, and dripping in jewels. Take 750, and see it done.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

VivianIt is exactly right.
VivianI feel that you know me as few others do, little lamb. How else could you make such a perfectly suitable dress?
VivianOnce I have defended Twillford from this threat, I’ll show you my gratitude.
VivianFor now…sweet dreams.

If the dress fails

VivianLamb, unless you want me to believe that you conspire against me, you will fix this dress.
YouYikes. Alterations coming right up!

The dress goes back on your table, so you can alter it.

VivianGood idea.

Dark Emissary

When the commission arrives

If the dress for Exotic Moth passed:

VivianGood evening, little puppy.

Otherwise:

VivianGood evening, little lamb.
YouGood evening, Queen of the Night.
VivianI’ve had an unexpected few weeks. Weeks of fascinating revelations.
VivianAdora Thimblethread, for example, is not what I took her to be.
YouYou don’t say?
VivianI gather that you are her confidant. I saw her leaving your shop before my arrival tonight.
YouOh, that wasn’t Adora. That was Princess Sophie. They’re completely different young women.
VivianWho have the same face.
VivianRest easy, lamb. I take all secrets to the grave.
VivianIn any case, a fortnight ago, I was…hmm. Observing Thimblethread.
YouYou were stalking her.
VivianShe led me to the royal palace. I watched as she climbed the walls, evaded the guards, and slipped unseen into the princess’ apartments.
VivianJust a few minutes later, the palace was in uproar. I heard a maid shout: “The Princess escaped the kidnappers! The Princess is back!”
VivianAnd Adora walks out of the royal apartments, smiling.
VivianSuch audacious deviousness and competence! It was thrilling to witness. My cold heart was warmed by the sight.
VivianTo think that, all along, I had been fooled.
YouWell, technically, she IS taking over your territory.
VivianOh, the kingdom in daylight holds no interest for me. Let the sun-scorched masses squabble and sweat over it.
VivianBut Adora…I do believe our young ruler might need a protector.
VivianSomeone to watch over her from the shadows, and perhaps to remove any stubborn obstacles from her path. A secret dark envoy of sorts.
VivianWhy shouldn’t the ruler of the day and the Queen of the Night get along, hmm? I’ll need to dress the part, of course.
VivianThe royal colours are white and gold — so I shall make mine black and gold. And as the Princess’ dark representative, I will need to look appropriately gothic and elaborate. See to it that you include both jewels and trim. I’ll give you 1250 if you make me happy.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

VivianImmaculate work.
VivianTruly, you are much better than the last dressmaker.
VivianSo I would advise you never try to leave Twillford. I would be…so terribly disappointed.
VivianAnd the road out of town is long, and dark—
Vivian!
YouWhat is it?
VivianIt’s…
VivianShe…she has not run away this time.

If you answered She loves a bowl of fresh cream. in Art Appreciator:

VivianThe cream must have worked!

Otherwise:

If you answered Carpaccio. in Art Appreciator:

VivianThe carpaccio must have worked!

Otherwise:

VivianThe diet-friendly treats must have worked!
VivianYour beautiful cat tolerates me.
VivianLamb, might I be permitted to—to pet the gorgeous creature?
YouWell, I don’t mind, but it’s kind of her choice.
VivianOf course! Of course, I would never gainsay her approval.
VivianHere, kitty…
Vivian!!!
YouSeems she likes you.
VivianSo…so soft.
VivianGlorious.

If the dress fails

VivianWhat is this, lamb?
VivianIs it some sort of fantasy of yours, to incur my wrath? I have encountered such individuals before, but I assure you—
Vivian!
YouWhat is it?
VivianIt’s…
VivianShe…she has not run away this time.
VivianYour beautiful cat tolerates me.

VivianSo…so soft.
VivianGlorious.

When the commission arrives

VivianA shark, perhaps…

If you haven't finished Dark Emissary yet:

Vivian…or a panther…yes…perhaps.

If you haven't finished Dark Emissary yet:

YouLady Vivian.
VivianHello, lamb. Tell me, do you associate me with any particular animal?

You pick one answer:

  • YouA leech.
    VivianYou see me…as a worm?
VivianThat is your final answer? Think very carefully now…
YouDid you know that some leech species can grow up to 17-inches long?
VivianI did not require nor desire this knowledge.
YouThey can also consume up to five times their own body weight in blood.
VivianYou regard me as a glutton?
YouSome latch onto their prey with teeth, while others possess a needle-like proboscis to pierce their victim’s skin. A stab-and-suck situation. Like a straw?
    VivianI see. Very good.
VivianNow, before you meet your untimely end, would you care to explain why you are regaling me with leech facts?
YouI find them fascinating. Just like you!
    VivianHmm…
    Vivian…so, you are saying…
Vivian…that you might still love me if I was a worm?
  • YouA fox.
VivianOh? So you think I am…fox-like.
    VivianA foxy lady.
    VivianHah.
  • YouA bunny rabbit.
VivianThis is not an answer I expected.
VivianIt does make me question your judgement.
    VivianAnd your sense of self-preservation.
    VivianAnd your eyesight.
VivianThank you, but your choice doesn’t quite satisfy me.
VivianI want a pet, you see. A familiar.
VivianIt is a great pity, then, that most animals instinctively mistrust me. Apart from dogs, for some reason.
Vivian…I do not like dogs.
YouEveryone likes dogs!
VivianEveryone is wrong, then. They are loud, inelegant, and too easily excitable.
YouYou should get a puppy.
VivianI am not getting a puppy.
YouIt should be a bloodhound.
VivianThis is not a productive conversation.
YouYou could call him Nibbles.
VivianRight! Dressmaking time!
VivianThe insect kingdom has never scorned my company. I’d like to honour their tolerance with—
YouYou have a problem with puppies, but you want me to dress you like a bug???
VivianA beautiful exotic moth, thank you. They are graceful, refined, and nocturnal.
VivianI desire a velvet gown with a skirt like the soft, powdery wings of a moth. It should be elegant and glamorous, and feature tassels. I’ll reward you with 400
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

VivianHow alluring.
VivianYou did well, lamb.
VivianAlthough…perhaps your temperament is better represented by a dog.
VivianGood job, puppy.

If the dress fails

VivianTell me…
VivianWhen you made this dress, did you imagine the moth to be in a sad state of decay?
VivianBecause what you’ve created is certainly tragic.

If you haven't finished Dark Emissary yet:

YouIs something the matter?
VivianAh, sweet lamb. I have spilled wine on my dress again. The damned spot won’t wash out.

If you haven't finished Dark Emissary yet:

VivianHere…why don’t you take a closer look?
YouThis is a dressmaking shop, not a laundry.
VivianBut don’t you want to comfort me in my distress? It’s the fourth dress I’ve stained this month.
VivianI’m bereft. Come on, come a little closer.
YouWell, if it’s for wine I recommend nitrum and hot water. Other stains, however, require—
VivianOh, never mind!
VivianI suppose you think I’ll keep you in business, the way I go through new dresses?
YouI appreciate your patronage!
Vivian…you are fortunate I find you charming, lamb.
VivianVery well — you may make me a new evening dress. It should be entirely red, so that future wine stains won’t show. Something risqué, goth, and glamorous will do. You may have 400.
YouAccept Commission

If the dress passes

VivianAh, what a beautiful red.
VivianJust like…fine wine.
VivianDelicious.

VivianDo you know? I don’t think my current dress is stained enough.
