When the commission arrives

EdithGood morning.
EdithWhy, isn’t this the loveliest shop? You’ve decorated so nicely.
EdithI do hope the other Twillford ladies are treating you well. How have you been settling in?

You pick one answer:

  • YouIt’s been going quite well! I am enjoying the challenge.
EdithOh, I’m so pleased to hear that.
  • YouI regret all the choices that led me to this job.
EdithAw, don’t you worry. I’m sure you’ll find your feet soon enough.
  • YouI have sewn a variety of inappropriate dresses for a funeral.
EdithThe town does have some colourful characters, doesn’t it?
EdithBut where are my manners? I’m Edith Swan.
YouWait, you’re the Edith Swan? The famous opera singer?
EdithOh, I don’t know about ‘famous.’ I sang a song or two when I was younger, but my days on the stage are long past.
EdithNow I’m just Edie.
YouSo you don’t sing anymore?
EdithI might serenade my cat on occasion.
EdithBut I stopped performing after my husband passed.
EdithShow business is a tough business, and, well…it was tougher than me, I suppose.
YouI’m sorry for your loss.
EdithYou are a sweetie. Thank you, dear.
EdithEnough of this sad talk, though! I am here because I have an interview with a biographer. He is writing a book about me, if you would believe it.
EdithI want to impress this young man. I must look just right for the occasion.
EdithIf I pay you 500, do you think you could make me a dress that is glamorous daywear? Something with a little razzle-dazzle sparkle, but that doesn’t say I’m trying too hard. Maybe make it a teensy bit risqué?

If the dress passes

EdithMy my!
EdithDarling, what a treat! This is just what I had in mind.
EdithOh, you’ll be seeing me again in no time.
EdithTa-tah!

If the dress fails

EdithOh.
EdithOh sweetie, no.
EdithNever mind, now. I’m sure I can dig something else out of my wardrobe for the interview.
EdithKeep trying! I’m sure you’ll get the hang of dressmaking soon.

When the commission arrives

EdithHello, sweet pea!
EdithHow are you carrying on?

You pick one answer:

  • YouMy life is consumed by fashion. I have started to dream about hemlines and interfacing.
EdithOh, I know just what that’s like, getting completely sucked into your work.
EdithRemember to take breaks, stretch, and drink enough water.
  • YouOh, can’t complain.
EdithReally? That’s very stoic of you, dear.
  • YouWell, the Edith Swan just walked through my doors, so, excellently.
EdithOh, you shameless flatterer. Next you’ll be asking for an autograph.
EdithI think the interview with my biographer went well, by the way.

If the dress for Biographer's Interview passed:

EdithHe seemed quite taken with the dress you made me.

Otherwise:

EdithAlthough he seemed unimpressed with the dress you made me.
EdithIt was lovely to reminisce about the past.
EdithThe stages, the costumes, the crowd. I got a bit misty-eyed remembering it all.
EdithOf course, that was when I had Robert by my side. My husband was a real charmer, you know.
EdithHe used to bring me flowers after every show. Our house was full of them. As soon as you’d open the door, you’d smell the peonies.
EdithI think I miss that most of all.
Edith……
EdithIt’s been years, but sometimes it feels like yesterday. After Robert passed, I was so lonely up under the spotlight.
EdithI lost my sparkle.
YouI think you’re very sparkly!
EdithOh hush, you.
EdithIt was a critic who said that — Octavia Pennworth.
EdithNow, I had received my share of poor reviews. That was part of the job. But Ms Pennworth…
EdithThis was my first show after losing Robert. A brand new opera, with an aria written just for me — I was playing the role of the seductive temptress Ritanella.
EdithLet me tell you, I was as nervous as a debutante stepping onto that stage again. Still, I thought my performance credible.
EdithBut Ms Pennworth…she…
EdithShe wrote that I had lost my sparkle. That I was “ridiculous” in the role of Ritanella.
EdithHer review said that “Swan’s husband must be turning in his grave at this latest outlandish display.”
YouWhere does this woman live? I just want to talk to her.
EdithNow, don’t be silly. Critics must write as they see fit.
EdithStill, I could not go back to the stage again. It hurt too much — it was too frightening.
EdithBut I get to keep my memories. And to share them! The biographer wishes to include some illustrations when submitting his manuscript, and has commissioned an artist to paint me.
EdithThe sitting is next week. I would love to replicate one of my old looks from the stage — Nymera the Firebird! Think glamorous, think risqué! Think feathers! Make me shine, darling. I can offer you 500.

If the dress passes

EdithOh ho HO!
EdithNow, this is what I call a dress.
EdithThe audience would have gone wild for this one.
EdithReady yourself for an encore, Dressmaker. I will be back!

If the dress fails

EdithWell.
EdithWell, in theatre, there’s this superstition.
EdithThat if you have a perfect dress rehearsal, the performance will be a flop.
EdithAnd this…this certainly does…flop.
EdithWhy don’t we pretend this look is just the rehearsal, hmm?

When the commission arrives

EdithMorning, sugar plum.

You pick one answer:

  • YouSalutations, my coruscating queen!
    EdithGoodness. What does that mean?
YouThat you are very sparkly, and also a queen.
EdithWell, thank you for the seditious sentiment, dear.
    YouWhat does that mean?
EdithThat we already have a monarchy, and you’re going to get us in trouble.
  • YouGreetings, sweet summer songbird of the stage!
EdithHeehee. You’ll get my feathers all ruffled, talking like that.
  • YouFelicitations, o vision of loveliness!
EdithNow, now. You can’t be flirting with your regular customers.
EdithHave you heard about the market fair? Apparently it’s going to be an extravaganza
Edith…of vegetables.
EdithYou’ve probably met Fiona? She’s a hardworking young lady, and a true sweetheart
Edith…provided you don’t threaten her business interests.
YouYikes.
EdithNo, no, she’s a delight! Either she’s wiser than her years, or I’m far more foolish than mine — but the two of us get along like a house on fire.
EdithAnd then there’s Dorothy, of course! Dotty's a bit of a fruitcake, truth be told…but a charming fruitcake nonetheless.
EdithThe three of us have started taking tea together. I haven’t gotten out the house much in the last few years, so it’s been a wonderful change of pace.
EdithThey’ve been egging me on, you know. Asking me to dress up and sing for them.
YouYou should!
EdithWell…maybe!
EdithApparently my biographer spoke to my agent. He says that there has been ‘unprecedented interest’ in the book. He claims that audiences are crying out for my return to the stage.
EdithIt sounds preposterous, but…oh, I don’t know!
EdithI miss being the Edith Swan. I miss the old me.
EdithBut what if I disappoint everyone again? I don’t think I could bear it — that loneliness up on the stage.
YouBut you have Fiona and Dorothy now.
Edith……
EdithI shall have to think on it. Perhaps one more performance wouldn’t hurt.
EdithBut first, I must show Fiona my support at the market fair! I shall be helping to promote her carrots.
EdithThey’re delicious, by the way.
EdithI need a dress for the fair. It should be playful and elaborate, and Fiona would like it to be orange, yellow or green. I think…she wants me to look like a carrot.
EdithThe things we do for friends, hmm? How does 300 sound?

If the dress passes

EdithAh, thank you sweet pea! This will do nicely.
EdithNow I just need to memorise the slogans.
Edith“Don’t be melon-cauli! Fiona’s prices are un-beet-able!”

If the dress fails

EdithPumpkin, I don’t think this is going to work. I don’t want to make an enemy of Fiona.
EdithIf I wear this, she’s going to suspect sabotage.
EdithAh well. Another bad review in my future.

When the commission arrives

EdithHello, honey.
YouEdith! You are performing again!
EdithDon’t I know it! Phew, all the old butterflies are back with a vengeance.
EdithI’ve been rehearsing every day for weeks, and I feel prepared but…
EdithBut it is still completely nerve-wracking!
YouDorothy and Fiona are very excited for you.
EdithMy beloved friends — those two have been such treasures.
EdithThey’ve buoyed me up through all of this. I would never have found the courage to perform again without them.
EdithMy wonderful girls. What did I do to deserve them? I feel such affection for Fiona and Dotty — I fear my heart will burst.
Edith…although that might also be the nerves.
YouDeep breaths!
EdithRight, yes. When I go up on that stage at the gala, I’m going to pretend that it’s just the two of them in the audience.
EdithI’ll sing just for them.
EdithI used to do that, you know: pretending it was only Robert watching. It’s so much less frightening that way.
EdithNot frightening at all, really.
EdithOh, I’m so thrilled to be back, Dressmaker! I’m going to bring the house down.
EdithFor this performance, I am taking the role of Portia in Sunsets Arise. She is a flamboyant figure — a disgraced warrior queen who wants to retake her throne.
EdithI’ll need a dress that is elaborate, risqué, gothic and glamorous. It must be a dramatic feast for the senses — go bold! Go big with form! Make me look magnificent, and I’ll pay you 1500.

Edith………
Edith………the nerves are back.
YouLet me see if I can alter this dress to remedy that.

World Stage

When the commission arrives

EdithGood afternoon, honeybun.
EdithYou look a little worried. Is something the matter?

You pick one answer:

  • YouI have made so many dresses. What if I run out of ideas?
EdithHmm, I understand. Most artists run low on inspiration sometimes.
EdithWhenever that happens to me, I take a little break and enjoy other people’s art instead.
EdithYou have to let yourself breathe, sweet pea. Take some time to refill your creative well.
  • YouSome of my other customers are having a hard time. I hope they are all right.
EdithI might have heard something about that. I wouldn’t want to gossip, but I don’t think you need to be too worried about any of your regular customers.
    YouWhy, what have you heard?
EdithOh, just a rumour or two. I’m sure you’ll find out soon enough.
EdithA little surprise never hurt anyone.
  • YouNever mind me! How was your grand return to the opera stage?
EdithBut I do mind! You’re always taking care of other people — someone needs to make sure you’re also taking care of you.
EdithNo, you see, I happen to feel you would benefit from a little recreational time.
EdithSo I’ve acquired tickets for you to attend all of this season’s shows at the theatre!
YouThat must have cost a fortune!
EdithNonsense! The theatre director gave me a stack of complimentary tickets. Consider this my treat.
YouWill you be in these shows?
EdithAs a matter of fact, yes. Things have been going rather splendidly, darling. The gala was an enormous success.
EdithRight before the curtain rose, I wanted to run away. I was so scared.
EdithBut I pictured Fiona and Dotty cheering me on in the audience, and I held my nerve. I imagined them sitting right next to Robert.
EdithAnd so I gathered all the love in my heart, and I sang.
EdithIn an instant, all my doubts fell away. I was still me, up there, under the lights. Everything in the world felt entirely right.
EdithIt was the most wonderful sense of clarity. For years, I had avoided my love and passions for fear of getting hurt again.
EdithBut in the end, love found me anyway.
EdithThere may be bad reviews and hurdles along the way, but I won’t hide anymore.
EdithSpeaking of… I need a dress to audition for my next big role! I must represent myself — will you make an ‘Edith Swan’ gown?
YouNothing would delight me more.
EdithOh, you charmer. In that case, I need a dress that’s risqué, elegant and elaborate. It should have feathers and glitz. Give me some theatre, sugarplum! Here is 1250.

If the dress passes

EdithThis is it! My dress!
EdithOh, you always make me sparkle, Dressmaker. I am ready to take to any stage now.
EdithThank you, sweetheart. You take care of yourself.

If the dress fails

EdithThis is…this is quite the statement.
EdithBut perhaps not the statement I intended to make.
EdithI don't mean to be a menace, but can I ask you to make some changes?
YouBut of course.

The dress goes back on your table, so you can alter it.

EdithThis is why you're my favourite, honeybun.

EdithOh, thank goodness.
EdithYou see, Mavis Montblanc is coming to Twillford!
YouMavis…who?
EdithMontblanc! The bestselling romance author!
EdithShe is giving a reading of her upcoming novel at the library this weekend.
EdithAnd there will be a dress-up competition — Ms Montblanc has promised to award the winner with an exclusive copy of the deleted chapters from her latest novel.
EdithScenes of a…<slide>steamy nature.</slide>
YouOh, right! The bodice-ripper writer! I think Rose mentioned her.
EdithMavis Montblanc is a romance author, thank you very much.
EdithI adore her books. I MUST have those deleted chapters.
EdithI MUST win this competition at all costs.
EdithContestants need to dress up as one of Ms Montblanc’s characters. I shall be going as Narcissi Bell, an evil heiress who leads the virtuous Captain Fortright astray.

EdithWhat a blustery day!
EdithHello, muffin. Have you eaten today? You look a bit famished.

You pick one answer:

  • YouWell, I could manage a snack.
EdithI’ll ask Fiona to drop off a strawberry tartlet with you. She made a fresh batch yesterday, and her short crust is simply divine.
  • You…I might have forgotten breakfast.
EdithBad muffin! You can’t go skipping meals!
EdithI’ll ask Fiona to drop off a strawberry tartlet with you. She made a fresh batch yesterday.
  • YouSewing is sustenance!
EdithI applaud your passion, but insist on a more balanced diet.
EdithHah, I sound like my Robert. He was always a worrier.
Edith“Edie, don’t forget your coat!”
Edith“Are you drinking enough water, my love?”
Edith“Darling, wear slippers! Your toes will freeze.”
EdithIf I ever gave him half the chance, my husband would have wrapped me up in cotton wool.
EdithNext week would have been our thirtieth anniversary. How things have changed — now I’m the one bringing him flowers and fretting.
EdithI wish I could tell him how well I’m doing. He would be so pleased. I take good care of myself — for his sake.
EdithWhich brings me to the reason for my visit, actually! I need a new dress for chilly days. I like to visit Robert’s grave in the evenings, and I tend to get rather cold.
EdithCould you make me a warm, outdoor dress? Something elegant will do very nicely. I can give you 750.

EdithHe’s a real coward. Runs for the hills at the merest tweet.
EdithDotty always brings along her flock when she visits me, and poor Butterbell is shedding from the stress.
