Dressmaker story: do choices matter, how many endings?

Dressmaker tells one story with one ending, and every client's story always plays out in the same order. Your answers and your dresses still leave little marks along the way.

Can you change the story?

Not the big story. Story commissions always come in the same order: the bell brings the first one you haven't completed yet. Your rank and friendship stars don't change who comes next.

You can still change the small things:

  • Some answers stay with the client. The game remembers a few things you tell people, and a later conversation changes to match. Tell Rose what you like to read, for example, and she may have a book for you later on.
  • How an earlier dress went, your friendship with a client and your rank can also change a few lines of what people say.
  • An answer can even change a commission's requirement lines: a line that depends on an answer counts only when you gave that answer. It happens in Poetic Muse, where your answers write the poem.

Are there multiple endings?

No, there's just one. There is only one ending. It plays when you deliver the final commission, and while the credits roll, the dresses you made take turns on the mannequin.

  • It begins after the Queen's letter, once every story commission is complete.
  • This commission has no requirement lines, and it always ends as a success.
  • Pigeon commissions are a bonus. To reach the final commission, you only need to complete the story commissions.

Do your choices have consequences?

Your dresses matter most. A commission that succeeds gives +1 friendship (one star) and +1 prestige. A failed one gives +0.25 friendship and +0.25 prestige.

Your answers never change your pay, your friendship or your prestige. Only the dress does that. So pick whatever answer makes you smile.

One answer does unlock a secret achievement. The achievements page tells you which one, if you'd like to know.

A dress that fails doesn't stop the story either. On some commissions you even get another try. The walkthrough lists them.

Can you reread the newspaper?

Not in the game. Each newspaper report shows up only once, at the front desk, and the game has no page to read it again.

Every report is on our newspaper page, word for word, so you can read them again any time.

Your dresses make the news. Some reports name the colour or the kind of fabric you used most for a commission, and some paragraphs change with how that commission went. The newspaper page marks these spots, so you can see what else a report could have said.

Can you read the dialogue again?

Yes, here on the wiki. Once you complete a commission, the game never offers it again. The dialogue pages have every conversation, client by client, including the lines that change with your answers and results.

Can you keep playing after the story ends?

Yes! After the credits, the game takes you back to the front desk, so you can keep sewing. Any pigeon commission you haven't taken yet is still waiting for you.

You can keep sewing off-the-rack dresses and gifts as long as you like. The pigeon guide lists every pigeon commission, so you can see which ones you still have left.

Can you watch the credits again?

Not from a menu. The credits roll only inside the ending, and no menu plays them again. Holding the mouse button makes the ending play faster.

To see them again, you'd play to the end again in another save slot. The saves guide explains how save slots work.
